My mother experienced Hurricane Betsy first hand, and was carried through the rising water by her older sister. I grew up hearing their stories, and could never imagine having to live through that.
Forty years later we lost our whole home to Hurricane Katrina (I was 14). Thankfully we were fortunate enough to evacuate. I remember sitting in the hotel room, watching the flooding on TV. The phone rings from a strange number. A family member who was a first responder at the time managed to just briefly get enough cell service to let us all know what we all but confirmed from the news: "It's all gone."
I remember being upset that I left the first computer I had ever built at home. I'll never forget the smell, and the eerie silence that became of everything I knew up to that point.
The city has made tremendous progress over the last decade, and I really hope they got the levees right this time.
