I think you are making the same mistake as the author. You think that your work has deeper meaning when in reality any breakthrough you discover will be patented by your university and commercialized by pharmaceutical companies making the president of your university and the CEO of the pharma company even richer while you will still just be getting by on your $60000 stipend. Enjoy your late nights in the lab and your delivery pizza.
Wow, this is a brutally honest read, and it resonates more because the author is now diseased and this was a reflection back on his life before he left us.
