This exemplifies everything that is wrong with tech today. Google and other tech companies have really lost their way if the file size of their logo is important enough to brag about. Is this what passes for technology in 2015?? This is what fastcompany has to say "being super accessible on poor mobile data connections is critical to brands that hope to touch billions." Oh yes, this is pure Silicon Valley (the place and TV show). "Improving the lives of the world's poor through the use of SVG optimized, 305 byte logos!"
I don't think this is comparable really. Silicon Valley was making fun of people who claim to solve world problems using distributed message queues. (that was the joke in the first episode, I belive) Google didn't do that - they said this is our new logo and it's cool (and there's a design blog post about it). You're adding the "Improving the lives of the world's poor" comment yourself.

When they do want to go for "helping the world" message, they actually do it and for a specific reason: http://www.google.com/earth/outreach/index.html

Google's words: "The new logo’s reduced file size avoids this workaround and the consistency has tremendous impact when you consider our goal of making Google more accessible and useful to users around the world, including the next billion." Such tremendous impact on the next billion who can now download a logo!
Some people have the job where their main goal is design and visual branding at Google. This is their achievement. It's a small step, but it's a part of their identity. I agree that the excitement is a bit high, but nowhere are they claiming helping the poor in the world (which is the reason I responded in the first place) - just making Google more accessible and useful. That's it.
