Ask HN: Elements of hacker cultural literacy
A while back I sent my wife Rands's Nerd Handbook. She loved it, but then mentioned that what she could really use was a brief description of some of the stuff that my nerd friends and I talk about. Sort of like the Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, but nerd-specific. So, I'm trying to compile a list of topics this might cover; right off the top of my head, here's what I have, in no particular order.
* Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy * Star Wars * Star Trek * World of Warcraft (and/or MMORPGs in general?) * Real-world RPGs, e.g. D&D and Magic: The Gathering. * Weird Al. * Lego. * Monty Python. * First-person shooter concepts and history. * Tolkein. * Ender's Game. (Surely there's other crucial SF that belongs on here.) * Office Space.
Please suggest/refute/discuss.
