What is the point?
a few years ago i was looking for something like this for my car stereo. instead of having to take the sd card out of the car and change the music every few days i could just use something like this to sync across new music. dunno if it works like that though.

there are cards called Eye-fi that have done wireless for a few years now but they only sync across photos from a dslr/camera to your computer or mobile phone

Some devices require you to physically connect them in order to access the data. An SD card with WiFi allows you to easily access the data while the card is still in the device.

Good question. I look at it this way, low cost & programmable. It's not open but for the cost and utility this outweighs doubt. I also look at small hardware, stuff that's cheap and hackable. So for the price of a card + usb power source you could have a portable web server. Think about that.

Transcend also offer WLANSD cards which with a simple set of commands over their telnet port can run an FTP server.
