Hey folks! Ben from Nylas here - I've been working on N1. Happy to answer any questions! We're excited to be open sourcing the client, and I can't wait to see what folks do with the plugin system.
Looks like it could be cool, but can't try it until you release a Windows client.
By which time I may have forgotten about the product. :(
Seems like simultaneous release is the way to go, so that you don't waste your time in the spotlight with a product applicable to less than 10% of the desktop/laptop market.
I'm sure there are more Mac users on HN than globally. But for what Windows users are here, it still puts us off to be made feel that we're considered to be second class customers, with delayed feature releases on Windows, permanently missing features, etc.
Finally, from the FAQ:
>Why is search sometimes slow?
This is a key problem. If you want to be competitive, search can't be slow, especially if you're hosting your own server solution. You're competing against the Gmail client, where search is pretty much instant. Yes, Google is the king of search. But you need to find a solution that fixes this problem or you're dead in the water, IMO.
First of all, congrats for shipping, and thank you for your work. I'm currently hacking something based on your inbox-scaffold-html5 project. You're clearly very talented, but I have one question. Is there any chance of you ditching coffee script for something more sane like plan ES6 or even better TypeScript? Aside from Github and you guys I don't know anyone still backing that horse. There's just too much people (myself included) that consider it unreadable.
Just found this before I saw the article posted here.. but it requires an invite! There are no build & run guidelines either - all roads lead to an invite request.
This was already on HN. Anyway what is notable to mention is that the default installation is using remote "sync engine", and thus sending all your emails through some 3rd party servers. The good thing is that you can setup this sync engine locally.

You might want to fix your privacy page. It says 'HIPPA' ready when it should be HIPAA ready.
Would it make sense to run the Client + Server on my laptop? Will you package a version of the Client that includes the server?
What I really want is a replacement for Thunderbird. Thunderbird does not ask me to run a server anywhere else. Will N1 do that?
I'm sure the bulk of HN users won't want to use your hosted server solution.
The other post linked to the Nylas website, this links to the Github repo.
I'm stuck waiting for an "invite" despite that I got the email announcement.
Great use of Electron though, probably.
