To the extent this story is on-topic, perhaps the "interesting new phenomenon" will be a different discussion about gun regulation than the one to which we've become accustomed in the USA.

The "interesting new phenomenon" is the rise of violence in the last decade due to the amount of Islam-crazed individuals that we are letting in. I don't see how gun control is remotely related to this.
I wonder how will Merkel and those similar to her defend their stance of letting everything in. I am sad, really sad, sad to see we are allowing this to happen to us. Not in the EU so I'm not sure what the atmosphere there is, but to me that sounds pretty racist. I bet it's an extraordinarily small percentage of Muslim immigrants who are violently inclined.

I believe that jMiles' point is this: When a shooting happens in the US, everyone[1] says that it's the fault of the US's crazy gun laws - that just about anyone can have a gun. When it happens in France, though, it can't be the fault of the US's gun laws.
