GOOD NEWS FROM ITALY ABOUT DIRECT DETECTION OF GWs

2 points by vinceleo ↗ HN
Dear ALL,

I would like to inform you that during the last 10 days in Europe the first direct detection of the gravitational waves from the binary system is discussed. The GWs are independently detected by VIRGO (European) and Advanced LIGO (USA) from the black holes binary. One BH companion has 10 Solar masses and other one is of 1.4 Solar masses. The detection is made at the frequency 125 Hz. The BHs binary is in Coma cluster at the distance ~ 15 Mpc. The discovery is expected to be announced in January 2016.

Best wishes, AB

Amazing news... if it holds up.

125 Hz? As in, they orbit each other 125 times per second? That means that they can't be more than 1/125th of a light-second apart, doesn't it? And that means that they are going to crash into each other very soon, doesn't it? (Sorry, I don't know enough General Relativity to put numbers on "how soon".)
