Ask HN: State of open, self-hosted media client/server software

In the past few years, I've tried valiantly to get onboard with modern music streaming services. I like that I can now access music from a wide variety of mobile devices. But, I've lately become frustrated with shifting availability of music, family account availability, ability to upload my own music where titles are missing, etc. Similar experience with the handful of movies I've purchased across a couple different online services and that are now locked to devices that I may or may not still own.

So, I want to strike out on my own and start purchasing my music / movies on physical media again, ripping, and uploading to my own self-hosted server on AWS / Digital Ocean.

I'm hoping the HN community knows the current lay of the land in terms of which are the best options along these lines. So far the leading candidates I've identified are:

Plex:

- Server not open source? Boo.

- Broad availability of apps for iOS, Android, various AppleTV/FireTV/Chromecast

Emby:

- I believe server is open source? Yay.

- Some availability of apps for iOS, Android, FireTV, ChromeCast (no AppleTV?)

And, I'm certain I read here on HN in the last week or two about a new entrant in the server space that allowed for use of Plex client apps. Sadly, I cannot for the life of me find what it was. Can anyone jog my memory or suggest other options that I should consider?
