Ask HN: Client Side vs. Server Side Rendering

Hey, I'm in the early stages of thinking about an app/website for a wide variety of users. I imagine that large amount of these users will not have good (fast) computers.

Are there any resources (particularly books) discussing the trade-offs between server and client side rendering? I've also thought about a combination of the two, but I'm not sure how well Django/Rails template/rendering plays with Ember/Knockout (the technologies I'm somewhat familiar with).

I'd love to hear your war stories about this and what kind of circumstances guided your decision.
