Next Steps in Career, Advice Please – Meta? Practical? Personal?
About me - I have quant undergrad degree and unrelated advanced degree; and getting technical training online through certificates - I worked in nonprofit for a bunch of years, loved it, but poor - Haven’t stayed at tech related company more than 1.5 years
Current role - Started analytics stack and first data warehouse. There are benefits to build a more complete solution - The rhetoric internally and externally on data/analytics gives optimism to my role - Started role with unrealistic expectations from management; Unable to get traction to provide additional developers for data projects - Employees are not as tech or data savvy, as lead to believe, so reporting and bottle neck hell - Brought on with expectations for salary increase at 6 months, which did not happen, despite excellent feedback. Promised a promotion and salary in next review - Still things I can learn from the biz and how a company adopts to change/growth - Company unable to work with my skills --- moved around the company and now in tech product. I have been assured that my role won't change...but I already started doing product manager tasks - Hours and demands are pretty chill and predictable, which means I have more time to work on side projects and take classes - People like and trust me here
New opportunities - Start-ups have more funding than all total investments of my current company - New companies with less of a track record than current one - Smaller team - Bikeable from my house - I will work longer hours - More challenges (good and bad) and level-up opportunities - Work at a technology based company - Meet interesting and like-minded people - Issues trying to be tackled by new start-ups align with my values more directly
