Ask HN: Why NFC payments is not made ubiquitous with NFC stickers with vendors?

Most NFC based payment systems (google, apple, samsung) require an NFC enabled POS device. Can we not simply use an NFC sticker instead? What are the challenges I am missing to see? Can someone in the forums point me to a relevant article/experience. Most grateful!
