Ask HN: How are forensic DNA tests reported?

Given the depth of expertise on HN I thought I might find an answer here that I can't seem to find by Googling.

Background is the case of two Burmese men convicted of murder in Thailand based almost entirely on DNA evidence. An internationally renowned expert on forensic DNA testing named Jane Taupin says the reporting of the DNA test results is highly irregular. A newspaper article [1] published today touches on some of the issues that involve applying proper statistical methods to the reporting of DNA tests, particularly when it may be mixed, i.e. more than one perpetrator is suspected.

The statistical analysis sounds interesting, and I suspect there is someone in the HN community who can comment on it in detail. It might also be of interest to people following DNA testing startups.
