Ask HN: Advice for Soon to Be College Freshman
My youngest daughter is going to go off to school next fall. Looks like she will major in a custom engineering discipline (concentration in mechanical + some electrical and CS). She wants to help tackle the sustainable energy set of problems. She also lobbies at the state and federal level for STEM education funding for the disadvantaged and minorities.
What advice would you give her about college, life, and living? What books should she read?
I'll start:
1) Find a mentor or a couple of mentors. Successful people and learn from them.
2) Give back often. Help others less fortunate than you.
3) Networking is a primary success skill. Learn to network by giving of yourself to others. (Read Networking Magic).
