Ask HN: Do you unpunish users who were targeted by astroturf cultural crusades?

In the case of American election years, we've seen people share "unpopular" ideas get not only downvoted, but hellbanned and other types of administrative punishment applied to them. In some cases, they get doxxed, threatened in real life, or denied employment.

If it becomes apparent that the motivation and efforts behind the normalization of these cultural purges are funded entirely by the efforts of, say, the Koch brothers or Goldman Sachs, (As is the case with Hilary Clinton and her despicable abuse of feminism) wouldn't that mean that the people targeted by these crusades were done so under false pretenses, thus, invalidating the punishment?
