No, we really don't need to. Emulating an extremely arrogant, two-faced search engine spammer is not one of my goals.
That's really an unfounded response. Sure, he might be arrogant and he might spam search engines..but let me ask you this, if you could "spam search engines" and get away with it all while profiting, would you do it? You would be an idiot not to. This might be an unpopular response, but you know deep down it's the truth.

Now I actually watched the video, and I admit that it's inspirational. He speaks many truths and through the duration of the video he mostly concentrates on his failures, and to me that's an invaluable resource. This has NOTHING to do with emulating anyone, in fact he points out at the end that you should not copy anyone and suggests you should lead and by leading you will find your successes in life. Fairly redundant material, but reiterating it from time to time helps.

As for him being two face, and arrogant..again, unfounded. You don't know the guy, do you? Judging someone via hearsay and via the internet is not cool.

As for the video, its worth the watch if you have the time.

Well, last time I talked to him in DMs on Twitter, he did say he considered himself to be God. That's not hearsay, it was what he wrote. That's pretty arrogant, don't you think? Other than that, no I don't know him personally, but his character certainly comes across in interviews and the recent back-and-forth with Aaron Wall.

No, I would not spam search engines if I could get away with it. Anyone that knows me knows that I've turned away money in my services by not adding black hat features its competitors add. I believe I can be successful without working against the interests of everyone else on the web, and so far that's worked out just fine.

Clearly, my "deep down truth" is not your "deep down truth". You're further down the white/black hat scale than me.

Well, I was trying to fight replying this because I can't really see any good coming of it, but I just have too much to say in response, and some of it may be of value.

You derive your opinion of him, via a DM on twitter, which was probably nothing more than mockery? I guess first impressions really do matter, and of course, the first 140 chars. Still I find that silly.

We apparently do differ, I sure as hell don't look at things as black and white, like you do, and I am probably not a model citizen. I look at everything as a game, a game is nothing more than a system and manipulating a system is something I find very intriguing. I mean, as a kid I used to take everything around me apart, from lawn mowers to computers. I was interested in how things worked, and making them better or different was what I did for enjoyment..in the process I broke a lot of things, did many things I shouldn't have, probably pissed my dad off a few times, but in the process I learned and I find that method extremely awesome. It's not like I hurt anyone in the process. Honestly, if I can do all that and profit, you're damn right I am going to do it. Hell, I AM going to do it.

The way I see it, SEO is exactly that..and, its not like everyone else can't do the same thing. There is nothing stopping you, me or anyone else from doing what Calcanis does, except of course the ability and therefore I don't see that as a bad thing to do. Call it bad morals, I call it pursuit of knowledge but who are you to judge?

I'm not sure I'm interested in watching someone who cannot put his phone aside for the duration of an interview.
That being said, it's interesting to hear his story.

He talks about from being considered a hero before the dot com crash to being a fraud after.

Jason acts like a motivational speaker in a hospice.
The opening sentence will turn off a lot of folks on HN, I suspect: "I’m a big fan of ...the work Jason Calacanis does to promote startups and help entrepreneurs."
The title makes me really want to not watch this.
If everyone titled their posts like this, the HN front page would be garbage.
