They are absolutely nothing like Hitler's. There was global political and economic turmoil at the time. No crisis, not even the financial troubles we are in currently compares to the state of Europe and the World at the time.
The institution of the US government is far more stable than the republic of Germany in 1936. The people were blind, but more importantly, they were desperate. The people of the US are not desperate.

I don't THINK he his terrible. He is terrible. This is not a subjective point of view. There is enough evidence.
A guy who wants to ban people of a whole religion to enter his country, who calls all Mexicans rapists, a guy who publicly promotes bullying and discrimination, a guy who feels he has to defend the size of his penis, a guy who lacks any kind of manners, any empathy, and any cultural sensitivity, is a terrible person to be the president of the a very powerful and influental country. And a terrible person in general.
The public figure trump is, by all measures of the civilized, modern world, a terrible person. And the only three groups who would support him are: 1) terrible persons themselves 2) stupid 3) desperate.
And 3) is the most likely option. This vice documentary shows the desperation of Trump supporters quite well. Or rather, the hope they put into Trump as a result of their frustration and desperation due to the seemingly never-ending struggle they are facing.

And as for becoming a hitler, there's a megalomaniac beast in many of us, probably more so in those who've climbed up the latter as high as Trump has.
The point is, nation doesn't necessarily have to loose The Great War and have its economy in ruins to bring a hitler to power.
Considering the stakes, I think it is more intelligent to be cautious and to try to make use of some of the lessons of the past than to be in denial.
