Strange. I was hoping to existing submission by submitting it, as HN usually just redirects you to an existing submission if you post a duplicate.

Medium adds a random traking code at the end of the URL, so HN thinks that each version is unique. For example you got ".qlb2b4az0". (On the other hand, each post has a unique identifier, in this case it is "3d4d2a83aa4d".)
