Yes, the idea is really similar to what they do.
This is a laudable idea, and I do dislike the focus on "breaking news" (which can apparently be anything currently happening). But, news sites have moved that direction because it works. I don't foresee many people collectively deciding to focus on one story for 3 days. We already have ways to dive into a subject when we are interested in it, and, collectively we just don't have the attention span to focus on a single topic. I think this would have to be funded by a nonprofit or a government grant.
It is definitely hard to do something like that. But just for some context, there some sites that are focused on only one subject.
