Ask HN: Can math/CS people work in climate/environmental engineering?

Those fields fascinate me, but I cannot major in them at this point. Is this field worth pursuing and what are some interesting subfields and startups in it right now? I was reading about environmental waste from paper vs. eBook readers and was wondering if I could somehow make a difference.
