Are there any startups working on medical alert systems for the elderly? What are the best current options?

Looking around suggests that the existing services like LifeAlert are antiquated and slightly scummy ("ripe for disruption"), with none of elegant features I'd expect for a modern system, e.g., a smartphone app for relatives that reports that the system is working, gives basic data, etc.
