Ask HN: How to Use Programming to Help Natural Disaster Victims?

I am a Canadian programmer who has been watching the developments of the Alberta wildfires [1]. So far 1600+ homes have burned to the ground and ~100k worth of people are being evacuated south because of the fire. I am a programmer who wants to help out in this situation somehow - could be communications between people, an app for organizing supplies. Am I more useful applying my skills, or just packing boxes with supplies and/or donating money? Does anyone here have experience using programming to help out in these situations?
