Ask HN: E-commerce programming experience/resources

After some thinking, I decided to focus on the e-commerce industry in order to start working as a technical (no marketing/sales experience) freelancer/consultant in the near future.

Some time ago I thought that it'd be great to show a personalized view for each user visiting a site according to their profile. But then I quickly found that this was an already implemented idea.

That the idea is already implemented is not the problem in this case, the issue here is that I didn't knew it beforehand, proving that I'm not into the trends of the industry.

I'm trying to slowly immerse in this industry, meeting with people and looking for clients already in the game. I have been looking for resources online but I didn't find a place to really learn where the industry is and where's moving.

I'd like to know about your experience if you're already working in this industry and some resources you recommend to help me get into it.
