Ask HN: Why do so few hardware vendors opensource their drivers?

Often you have to either pay or somehow obtain the hardware specification directly from the vendor and sign an NDA. Furthermore, drivers are often proprietary and not opensource (not sure if those are mutually exclusive).

Wouldn't it be in their best interest to opensource their Windows (or other operating systems) drivers so that the device can be ported to other operating systems, and improved by its users?
