The number was updated to an even more horrifying 50 dead and 53 injured, some critically.

Worst mass-shooting in American history.

It's been updated to fifty making it the worst mass shooting in US history [1].

More updates:

It was a gay/LGBT nightclub

53 Dead, 40 or so wounded.

Perpetrator is "Omar Mir Seddique Mateen" [1], born in US to Afghan immigrant parents. He was killed by the police. Apparently he was a security officer and had a firearms license because of that [5].

"We do have suggestions that that individual may have leanings towards that, that particular ideology [Islamic extremism]. But right now we can’t say definitively, so we’re still running everything around," (quote from article). [2]

If you're in Orlando and wonder how you can help: give blood, especiall O+, O- and AB, at "Oneblood" (2 locations currently open) [3]

Situation ended because police went in. One officer was apparently shot in the head. [4]

This is a horrible news but there is no way this kind of thread won't derail. No matter what people think of the situation, this is a huge tragedy, which reminds me what my country lived the 13 of November 2015. I just want to send my thoughts to my fellows Americans friends and the gay community in Orlando. I'll leave it there.
And people ask why we still need Pride events. THIS is precisely why we still need pride.
Has there been any indication that this was a homophobic related crime? I haven't seen any yet.
Until we get more on the shooters motives it's hard to tell. However, a mass shooting specifically targeting an LGBT club seems unlikely to be coincidental.
The father claimed the murderer was violently homophobic.
It was a terrorist attack, Pride events won't change a damn thing about it.
nvm..
Comments of the form "My country doesn't have this problem that yours does" or variants are generally annoying and useless when they do not name the country.
(comment deleted)
Also sadly it boils down to "My country doesn't have this problem, yet".
Good job muslims, ya fucked up again. Now we're going to have another 10 years of racism. Fuck me.
Was this removed from the front page?

So news about Prince dying from overdose is okay but 50+ people shot to death is not okay?

Lots of people have clicked 'flag', presumably.

There's absolutely no way that the comments here will be productive and not derail, so people have flagged it.

It's almost impossible that anybody with an internet connection will miss this news, so it doesn't need to be here, either.

This is the thing though, it has also been removed from Reddit !

Think about that.

If comments are a problem, then lock it for comments and only allow voting.

But censoring out important news is a huge problem.

Well then I expect all breaking news to be deleted from HN, and I mean all of it.

You can't take the largest mass killing on American soil since 9/11 and simply censor it out because it is a hassle.

>> "But censoring out important news is a huge problem."

People aren't coming to HN for actual news stories. It's not like they won't see this story somewhere else within minutes. Considering who quickly comments here descend into madness on any story involving terrorism or guns it's for the best it was flagged. And locking the comments on HN seems pointless as they're the main reason people are here.

Users are flagging these stories. They flagged the Prince stories too. This is all in keeping with the HN guidelines:

Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon. [...] If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic.

The exceptions, of course, would be stories that also gratify intellectual curiosity. That's sadly not the case here.

Seeing as more gun control will only serve to get Trump elected, why not have an "Arm The LGBTQ" movement? If one of them had a gun, this probably would've been avoided.

(a LGBTQ gun owner/NRA member. Yes, we exist.)
