Ask HN: Build Systems

I am impressed with the design of gradle and dislike make/autotools. So before i start to hack things together an build a prototype I would like to know what you like or hate about your build system (or what feature you would really like to see). I am currently searching for a language to build this thing in (no JVM!) so if you can recommend something, feel free to share!
