Ask HN: Learning ASP/C# for new job, recommendations?

TL;DR; Recommendations for someone with PHP/MySQL skill, trying to learn ASP.NET/C#

---

In a few months time I'm going to be starting a new job, in short the company creates a number of PaaS/SaaS services and the software stack is Microsoft (C#, SQL and ASP.NET)

My specific role relates to the physical supporting networks and infrastructure, along with the design of how the services actually operate, so while there is no requirement for me to do any developing or even understand the platform code, I am still really interested in getting a base knowledge.

Also I've always used bits of PHP/MySQL in my own time for personal projects, and also in the work place to simplify/automate some of the more boring jobs, not quite DevOps but I'm sure you get the idea. As i'm going to be surrounded by ASP/C# developers it seems logical that if I build any tools there it's not in PHP, so again I'm not trying to be a 'developer' in a few months, but I would like to be able to actually create something useful.

I've started learning bits, however I just seem to be getting off to a slow start. When I learnt PHP/MySQL I found a few great videos and general tutorials that would take you from nothing to a functional basic blog website, with pages/authentication/comments etc... T

However I've looked around places like Lynda and just can't find anything 'good' when it comes to Microsoft based coding, any recommendations/ideas? Most of what I'm finding just cover the fundamentals of each feature, rather than getting something from a DB into a browser with some interaction.

Thanks :)
