Ask HN: Using a Virtual Machine as Your Primary Computing Environment

I recently saw a comment where an individual stated he had moved to using a virtual machine as his primary computing environment. The idea was that he could just backup the VM itself and that doing so would free him from worrying about any one specific computer.

I was curious if anyone here on HN is doing this. And if so, I would appreciate hearing about your perceived benefits for doing so.
