Ask HN: Security in Bitcoin world – where do we stand?

1 points by zaphodq ↗ HN
On August 2 yet another major hack in Bitcoin world surfaced; bitfinex (https://www.bitfinex.com/) one of the top exchanges was hacked and the users got robbed of 120k bitcoins. Bitfinex was using bitgo a bitcoin wallet service with the tagline "The leader in blockchain security". Some say bitgo had nothing to do with the breach (https://steemit.com/security/@joelkatz/bitfinex-claiming-the-compromise-was-entirely-on-their-end). Bitfinex takes full responsibility for the losses. Based on the very little vague facts available a lot of people are of the opinion that this was an insider job. Hacker might have gained access to Bitfinex's 2 multisig keys. I am not a expert in security and cryptography but I want to get educated about these topics. I have some questions which will help me and perhaps other interested people to make a headstart. 1) Is there still no benchmark standard for bitcoin exchanges so that they can't be hacked? 2) Is there a way bitcoin users can educate themselves about security issues and edge cases related to handling bitcoins? 3) From a developer perspective how can I educate myself about bitcoin exchanges and wallet setups?

Thanks for the help!
