Ask HN: Most Effective Thing You Did Publicizing New Site or App?

I'm finishing up a Minimal Viable Product (MVP) and getting ready to launch. I'm looking for ideas other than spamming hackernews and reddit/r/programming with links as some tend to do. What did you do publicize your app or service? Where somethings more effective than others?
