I often have musical hallucinations before falling asleep. It is not uncommon for me to hear music that suddenly stops. This usually happens when my mind is not busy thinking of anything else. Does anyone else experience this?
Be careful who you tell this to. Or be prepared to vehemently defend yourself from charges of incompetence at the next important political decision you face.
Propaganda based on the intellect can and does happen more routinely than is healthy in any society.
Sorry if this is a downer. I have your best interests in mind.
Called hypnagogic auditory hallucinations - these are common period (Feynmann discusses how to acquire them in his autobiography) but especially common if you have temporal lobe epilepsy. Note that most cases of epilepsy are never diagnosed because most seizures are nocturnal, and focal, not necessarily the tonic/clonic seizures movies have made us familiar with.
I often hear people screaming, children playing or, more often, people calling for me as I'm entering sleep. About once a month I hear my grandmother falling, which has happened before, so I have to get up and respond to it no matter what.
I hear music too, when I am close to sleep. I often have problems getting to sleep, so when I hear it, it's reassuring to me, because I know then that I will fall asleep soon.
However, it never suddenly stops for me.
I've fooled around with music since I was a teenager, but was never really good at playing or composing it. But what I hear at night always sounds like good music. I can't tell if I'm making up brand-new music, or if my mind is "mashing-up" songs that I've heard before.
Sometimes I rouse myself to hum the melody into my phone. More often, I'm so close to sleep that I sort of "dream" that I get up and record it on my phone. Or, the music is so clear that I am sure I will remember it when I wake up. The melodies are never that interesting or complex; it's more the voicing of the "instruments".
I can't wait until they invent a machine that can record and playback our thoughts, dreams, etc. I would love to hear my sleep music while awake. I hope I have access to it in my lifetime.

I wonder if I have some sort of illness or is it just a result of being a musician for 20 years
I also have perfect pitch, which apparently may have more to do with genetics than training and experience
