Ask HN: Specializations within IT

Lately I’ve been looking for jobs overseas (US/Canada) and I’ve noticed that unlike my home country, over there IT Jobs are very specific. They look for people with very specific/unique skills but not for well-rounded IT Professionals that “know a little bit of everything”.

Given this, I would like some advice on how to become more specialized considering that I can’t switch jobs right now. I would also like to hear about what areas of IT in your opinion don’t have too many professionals so I can evaluate specializing in those.
