Ask HN: Setting up a captive portal

Hey guys,

The documentation and solutions are quite dated for setting up a public WiFi spot with a captive portal. Are there any resources that I am overlooking into how one can build a solution for small business? Setting up the hardware and creating the portal.

It depends on what hardware and software you want to mix. If you're using Ubiquiti products (www.ubnt.com), Unifi software will take care of it for the most part, since it includes it out of the box (just go to the settings), and they're quite cheap. If you're going the HP way, it will cost you more, but HP mobility controllers also have support for captive portals, though they're quite more complicated (and powerfull at the same time)

If you're on a budget or you already have your hardware and doesn't have direct support for it, you might want to look into pfSense as an alternative for your actual gateway, and separate your lan into at least two VLANs, one for your business network and another one for the guest access. Pfsense has also support for guest portals and you should be able to use it with a switch based vlan
