Ask HN: Articles about the effects of differentiation on social groups?

Well the title says all. Please if you know any (maybe well known) papers or journal articles (free, behind paywall) about the effects of differentiation on social groups post it here. The problem is I'm not from the field. I'm trying to write about online communities (maybe for HN) but I can't find any papers, only some (known?) books on the topic.
