What approach would you take toward self-learning?

What methods would you use to learn as efficiently as possible with minimum backtracking?

My curiosity is if you could do it all over again how would you do it to avoid all the headaches that come with it?

I am in a situation where I have unlimited free time and no responsibilities until further notice. I don't wanna sit on my hands doing nothing with this time. So I'm hoping to learn from everybody else's experience. Every little bit counts.
