Nobel Prize in chemistry awarded for molecular machines (washingtonpost.com)

Journalists seem to be having a difficult time describing exactly what this prize is about. Bloomberg Radio reported that the scientists discovered/created "molecules that perform tasks when energy is added". Huh?
