Ask HN: Should I build my own phone number auth with Twilio or use a service?

There are quite a few all-in-one services like AccountKit by Facebook or Sinch. I've already started encountering issues with SMS delivery in foreign countries (e.g. Thailand).

Does anyone have any experience building these kind of auth systems? Are the edge cases minimal or is it a long-term headache?
