Ask HN: Best fast software?

I just got a new computer for traveling, it was small and cheap but not performant. Quad core 1.6GHz, 4GB ram, 32GB storage. I was curious if HN has some recommendations for very performant software? I am currently using ripgrep on it because it is more performant than grep. Windows or Linux recommendations count.
