The sad thing about these situations is that the client will basically not face any consequences for this behavior, the freelancer will only look bad because of their complaining here, and even UpWork will look callous in their handling of the situation. No winners.

That said, one bit of advice: never ever start work without a clear and signed Scope of Work document, and never ever accept access credentials until you are actively engaged.
