I'm not that familiar with iPad. Is there a point in stealing one? Can't Apple detect/disable the device remotely, assuming you know the serial number?
More likely it was someone with an addiction to substance / alcohol and they weren't planning on using it for themselves but instead selling it on for a quick buck.
