Ask HN: Managers – Your Best Strategies for Leading a Dev Team?
Got a promotion and have been working as the lead on a project. What are the best ways to manage people to make sure we ship things on time, but also that people don't feel marginalized? I don't think pulling rank is the best way to do things, except only very occasionally.
Really, what are your best tips for getting a team on board with (your) idea that doesn't make them feel like they're getting short shrift and they feel respected? Should we try their idea first, or compromise, or if I know their method will fail should we do that so they can see that their idea failed? Just looking for general tips for corralling a team toward one goal, without being a jerk.
