Ask HN: Working in Non-Profits/Higher Education?

I am curious about other programmers' experience working in non-profits and/or higher education. I have worked in higher education in the Bay Area since the start of my career, but am curious about the private sector.

Some things I love about my job: - Great team/people/community - Supporting art students/mission of college - Free classes - Job security (the college isn't going anywhere)

Some things I don't like: - Feels like things I build don't get used - Impact feels low - Pay less than market - Administrators less than willing to adapt to new technologies/innovation
