Ask HN: Can you be successful in tech with an anxiety disorder?
I suffer from a mildly severe case of obsessive-compulsive disorder. The main symptom that I struggle with daily is that I feel an overwhelming need to repeat certain tasks until I feel "just right". This severely affects my productivity at work (contract software engineer at a startup) but I'm still able to deliver projects in a reasonable amount of time. Lately it's been very difficult for me.
I've previously worked with psychologists and therapists, tried medications, tried behavioral therapy, to varying degrees of success.
I've heard it said that a mild case of OCD can be good as an engineer or even startup founder. And I know big companies cannot deny reasonable accommodations for a medical condition, but my question for HN is: how does this play out in real life? Can you be successful in tech while in outpatient treatment for OCD? How understanding are employers? Should I look at a different career path?
