Ask HN: How to get started with digital privacy?

I've been using GMail and the same password for all of my website logins. I've installed WhattsApp and Signal, but most of my friends don't use those. I need to enable filevault on my mac. Is it worth converting from GMail to Proton Mail? Is there a OS X app for password management (perhaps 1Password?). How should I be using GPG? Sorry, I know it's nearly 2017 but I want to start taking this stuff seriously.
