Ask HN: What equipment is needed to miniaturize a transistor?

I've been able to find a lot of resources about building transistors from scratch. What I can't find is documentation on the process of building smaller transistors. Assuming for a second money for development is not a issue, where would you start? What terms would you search for? Are there books or papers available, or is all the technology and knowledge needed kept secret by companies like intel?
