you're right, traveling in these countries is pretty expensive but if you're willing to tough it out (maybe take a few buses and public transportation) you can still get almost anywhere for less than $500USD
yeah! That's actually a really good point. I've never done it so no experience there. Which countries do you think would be a good starting point? I've seen people buy cars in Mexico, roadtripping all through the country and then re-selling it. Or motorbikes in Vietnam.
I like the idea because that makes you less dependent on cheap flights you need to plan ahead, plus you get to more remote (cooler) places.
Err, they forget visa, inter-hub (eg. to/from airport), intra-transit overnight hotel expenses. These would add about 25-50% to the quoted prices, IMHO.
I personally think cycle-touring with camping equipment is the best way to travel long term on the cheap without relying on couchsurfing and similar systems. I've done longer trips in Australia, China, France, Romania and Taiwan but always stay in hotels. It still works out pretty cheaply since you see loads of cool stuff between towns and food/etc. always costs less out of major centers. Another benefit is scheduling - leave when you wake up, stop where you please. No more sync-with-the-bus-departure, alarm-clock hassles. Try it!
For inter-continental, couple your bike and camping equipment with a second hand oceangoing yacht. You can get very decent vessels under USD$100,000, and the best place to buy on the used market seems to be Florida.

That's not weird.
