Ask HN: Where are today's top-tier programming jobs? (i.e. most interesting)

It seems the vast majority of programming jobs these days are just maintenance or gluing together existing systems and libraries. Glassdoor is full of lukewarm descriptions of such jobs, even from programmers at big tech companies.

So I guess my question is where should one focus to find the most interesting jobs? Is it just a matter of excelling in your work and climbing whatever ladder you're on? Or are some fields/disciplines just generally more interesting than others?

Thirty years ago, a typical programming job would be a 'programmer analyst'. Fifteen years ago, probably JavaBeans.
