Not sure where to focus my energies

I'm in middle-career and I'd like to work for a big industry. I'm not sure whether to focus on algorithms (i.e. google interviews.. they're quite random and I might have to spend a lot to prepare) or trying to specialize myself in a field like compilers or computer graphics..

since my time is limited I'm not sure which approach should I take for next year. Any suggestion is welcome.
