Ask HN: Vector graphics and retina displays

I just got a retina display and to my dismay I saw that the resolution is set at half the pixels. Researching it I realized that the reason is that the display becomes unreadably small.

Is this because MacOS' gui isn't vector graphics based? I never had a similar problem with my Irix machine (and it could support very high resolutions!)
