Poll: how should the search feature be implemented?

Today search was added to HN in the form of a textlink to Google. It's currently placed at the bottom left of the page. Personally I feel that such a prominent feature should reside in the header and not the footer. I'd also say that it should be an input field instead of a link. What do you think?
